Meal Planning for a New Season of Wellness

September is a time to fall forward into healthy lifestyle changes. The first step in this journey towards wellness is creating a personalized meal plan. This does not mean stocking the refrigerator with food for the family. Rather it is taking intentional steps to fill your pantry and your plate with food choices replete with macronutrients for the body, mind, and soul.

As a dual board-certified physician in family and obesity medicine, autumn is one of my favorite times to work with my patients and corporate clients on good eating habits. This wellness foundation prepares us for managing our behaviors during the holiday season, so we look and feel our best. Good nutrition also helps our bodies to build strong immune systems, manage our stress, sleep well, and think clearly as life gets busier during the last few months of the year.

Macronutrients 101

There are three macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. They provide your body with calories, energy, and the building blocks of cellular growth, immune function, and overall repair. A balanced intake of these vital nutrients is necessary for optimum health and wellness. Below outlines the amount of each macronutrient required in your daily meal plan.
Carbohydrates. A person needs 130 g daily. Around 45–65% of their daily calorie intake should be from carbs.
Protein. Females need 46 g, and males need 56 g. Around 10–30% of their daily calorie intake should be from protein.
Fats: Around 20–35% of a person’s daily calorie intake should be from fats.
